The Reason why I Don't Make Diets

Frankly, because they don't work. Don't get me wrong they do work in the short-term: they make you loose weight. 

But they don't address the root cause that led you to gain the weight in the first place, and they're hardly the tool we need to help us regain our health when we feel it's not optimal. And this is makes them a major culprit. Why? Because the statistics on weight regain are clear: within one year of weight loss, nearly 80% of people will have regain all the weight they had lost. Within two years the number goes up to 85% and within three years more than 95% of people are back to their pre-diet weight.

This means that the money and the time spent on the diet is mostly wasted and these investments might actually turn out to be counterproductive. Here the picture gets complicated but overall what we know is that if a diet leads to weight loss but it's not well balanced in terms of macro and micronutrients, if the weigh loss takes place too quickly and if it's not accompanied by the right kind of exercise, together with the fat-loss we also tend to loose an excessive amount of lean body mass and bone mass/mineral density. Imagine loosing muscle and bone and then also regaining all the fat you had lost: a recipe for log-term poor health. Moreover, cycles of weight loss and weight gain are associated with worst health outcomes compared to scenarios where the person understands what caused the weight gain in the first place and learns to correct the behaviors at the root of the problem.
